Chapter 14
AS SOON as Travis pulled over, I crossed my arms over my chest. “There is no fucking way I’m setting foot anywhere near that place.”
He turned off the engine and turned to look at me. “Technically, you’ve already set both feet really near the place. I mean, it’s five feet away.”
I snorted and turned to look away from him.
“Rick, be a grown-up. Nobody’s gonna whip you or anything. Unless you’d like someone to?” he asked grinning.
I shuddered. “That’s not fucking funny. I’m not setting foot in there, do you hear me?”
He frowned. “Come on, man, don’t be so uptight. It’s just a shop, okay? We’ll get what we need and—”
I squinted at him. “Why would we need anything from this shop?”
He sighed. “The best way for you to sniff out marking hormones is to go someplace where there’s lots of it to sniff without the sources knowing a thing. I only know a couple of spots like that, and they all need the kind of attire this shop has to offer.”
My blood ran cold. “I am not setting a goddamn foot into any SM club, if that’s what you’re thinking. Not one fucking foot, you understand?”
Travis set his palm on my inner thigh, rubbing slowly at my tense muscles. “Don’t freak out on me, okay? I promise we’ll just be undercover, no roughing it up or anything. It’s just gonna be like playing dress-up, you know? We put on costumes, take rounds through the clubs so you can sniff as many of the hormones as you can, then walk out. Nothing else, I promise you.”
I gritted my teeth. “No.”
He leaned in closer, gripping my chin with his other hand as he kept massaging my thigh. “Hey, look at me,” he whispered.
I shook my head. This was where I drew the line.
“Look at me,” he said in the alpha voice.
Well, that did it. My head snapped in his direction, gaze focused on his. I so hated when he did that.
“I can make you, and if I have to I will. This is what we need to do to further our investigation, Rick. And we are going to do it. Now, you either trust me enough to know I won’t let anyone lay a fucking finger on you and that I won’t hurt you in any way, or I make you do as I say. It’s your choice, but you’re doing it either way.”
I gulped and my stomach clenched tight. “Please, don’t make me do this,” I whispered.
He sighed and leaned in to kiss me, a soft, tender caress of his lips against mine. “I’d rip out everyone’s throats before letting anyone hurt you, pup, I swear,” he murmured against my lips.
I took in deep whiffs of his scent, let it coat the inside of my throat and lungs. My heartbeat slowed down a little and the panic fluttering through my veins subsided slowly. I couldn’t stand walking into a place that celebrated the desire to give and take pain. Not after the whole Mitch thing, I just couldn’t do it.
